Pandemonium broke out in Midtown Manhattan as hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters confronted Trump Tower to protest the detention of Mahmoud Khalil. Protesters had gathered in the streets to protest the detention of Khalil, who is a leading organizer of Palestinian solidarity rallies at Columbia University. In a counterattack, U.S. law enforcers had almost 100 individuals detained.

Mahmoud Khalil, 30-year-old Palestinian-born who has a U.S. green card, was arrested by federal agents in New York on Saturday. Media reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. immigration officials apprehended Khalil for taking part in a pro-Palestinian protest rally at Columbia University.

The arrest took place initially in the New Jersey detention center, and Khalil was subsequently moved to the Jena Jail in Louisiana. The Trump administration has been more aggressive in deporting some individuals, and despite the fact that Khalil's spouse is an American, his status in terms of the law is unclear.

Protesters demand justice

During the protest, protesters were chanting slogans like "Free Mahmoud, Free Them All!" and "We Want Justice, Bring Mahmoud Home Now!" The Jewish Voice for Peace organized demonstration had various activists coming in to call for Khalil to be released on an immediate basis.

Among the guests present was actress Debra Winger, who denounced the Trump administration and said, "I stand for my rights and for Mahmoud Khalil, who was illegally kidnapped and taken to an unknown destination. Does this feel like America to you?"

Homeland security's response

The Department of Homeland Security had also called Khalil to appear at a hearing in Louisiana on March 27. Khalil refused to sign the papers that were presented to him, which continued to heighten the legal conflict. Though tensions are still running high, officials have verified that the protests are now being controlled.
